Tips for Antifreezing of RF Lasers

Liquids have a freezing point, and when the temperature of the liquid is lower than this freezing point, the liquid will solidify to form a solid. The volume of deionized water or pure water will become larger during the process of solidification, which will damage the pipes of the water-cooling system and the sealed connection, resulting in damages.


Take the glass laser tube as an example. If the temperature of the water cooler is too low, it may cause the water cooler to malfunction and the pipeline to freeze. Because the density of ice is less than that of water, the water cooler and the interior of the laser tube will break due to volumetric expansion, resulting in major damage to related core components.

In order to avoid damage to the RF laser, its output head, and the water cooler caused by the solidification of the cooling liquid, we provide you with the following 3 solutions:


1. Do not turn off the water chiller at night if there is absolutely no power outage in the local area. At the same time, to save energy, the temperature of  low and normal-temperature water should be adjusted to 5 ~ 10℃ to ensure that the coolant is circulating and the temperature is not lower than the freezing point.

2、Drain the cooling liquid in the RF laser, laser output head and water cooler after usage every day.


-Use a water chiller to drain the liquid before shutting down the machine.

-Drain the remaining water with low pressure air.


- The drain outlet of the water cooler should always remain open.


Note: Only when all the cooling water in the RF laser, RF laser output head, processing head and water cooler is drained can you effectively protect the entire set of water-cooling pipelines and related components!



3、Use antifreeze as coolant.


When power outage occurs frequently in the operating environment or the conditions of draining the coolant daily are lacking, antifreeze must be used. The basic liquid of antifreeze is generally composed of alcohol and water. Antifreeze requires high boiling point and flash point, high specific heat and conductivity, low low-temperature viscosity, and a lack of tendency to foam. It should not corrode metal parts, rubber hoses, etc. When you select or concoct the antifreeze, note that its freezing point should be 5°C lower than the lowest temperature of the operating environment.


When choosing antifreeze, you should choose a dedicated antifreeze of a professional brand instead of ethanol as a replacement. Otherwise it may cause damage!


It is recommended to choose CLARIANT for antifreeze, and there are two models of antifreeze suitable for laser systems:


1) Antifrogen®N (industrial product)

2) Antifrogen®L (food grade)


The addition ratio is 3:7 (3 for antifreeze, 7 for water), and after being added the antifreeze, the equipment can resist -20°C without freezing.

In order to ensure a smooth water path for adding antifreeze, first of all, ensure that the water tank is clean:


1) Drain the used water, clean the inner wall of the water tank and the filter, and add water to wash away the stains.


2) Remove the filter element and water cup, clean the water cup, and replace the filter element (Pay attention to whether the filter element and water cup have sealing rings, and do not lose them).


3)Any antifreeze cannot completely replace deionized water and cannot be used for a long time throughout the year. After winter, the pipeline must be cleaned with deionized water or purified water, and then deionized water or purified water must be used as the coolant.

If possible, we still recommend improving the electricity environment and keeping the water cooler on.


If the laser cutting machine is not used for a long time, anywhere the cooling water passes through, especially the pipeline and the interior of the laser tube, the cooling water in there must be completely drained.


Extremely cold weather will cause irreparable damage to the optical part of the laser. Please be sure to store and use the laser strictly in accordance with the storage and working temperature indicated on our RF Laser Manual. Preventive and protective measures must be taken to prevent unnecessary financial losses.
